Identity theft remains one of the fastest growing crimes in the United States. Every year, thousands of Northern Kentucky residents and small businesses become victims because old tax returns, bank statements, medical records, and other sensitive papers end up in the wrong hands. At the same time, paper is one of the most recyclable materials we have, when shredded properly, it can be turned back into new paper products instead of ending up in a landfill.

That's why cities across Northern Kentucky host annual or semi-annual shred events. These community events bring professional mobile shredding trucks (often operated by Shred-It or similar bonded companies) directly to residents. You can watch your documents being destroyed on site in minutes, knowing the shredded paper will be recycled. Many events are completely free for residents and often bundled with e-waste recycling, Styrofoam collection, or spring/fall clean-up weeks.

Why Shred Events Matter in Northern Kentucky

🛡️ Identity Protection

The FTC receives over a million identity theft reports annually. A single unshredded document with your Social Security number or account details can lead to years of headaches. Community shred events give you a secure, witnessed destruction option that home shredders often can't match for volume.

🌍 Environmental Benefit

Shredded paper from these events is typically baled and sent to paper mills. This keeps valuable fiber out of landfills and reduces the need for virgin pulp. Many NKY events partner with county solid waste programs to ensure maximum diversion from waste streams.

🤝 Community Convenience

These events are free or donation-based, professionally managed, and often drive-thru or quick-drop. No need to pay private shredding services ($1–$3 per pound) or risk curbside theft. Cities like Independence, Florence, and Covington make it easy for families and small businesses.

Shredded Documents

Tips for Attending a Shred Event

  • Paper documents only (tax returns, bank/credit card statements, medical records, pay stubs, expired IDs, utility bills, legal papers)
  • Staples, paper clips, rubber bands, and thin plastics (credit cards, insurance cards) are usually OK
  • Remove large binders, plastic folders, and electronics (most events do not accept hard drives or devices)
  • Some events accept up to 4 paper bags or 2 banker's boxes, others are "reasonable household volume"

Arrive early, popular events develop lines. Most are drive thru or quick drop off. Volunteers or staff often help unload. You can usually watch the shredding through a window or on a screen. The process takes just a few minutes per vehicle. Bring proof of residency for city resident only events.

Many cities offer year-round options through libraries or partner with private services. You can also purchase a home cross-cut shredder or use paid drop off locations (e.g., some UPS Stores or Shred Nations facilities in Florence). For large volumes, contact Shred-It or Proshred directly for mobile service quotes.
